Planning Your Move

Your moving experience does not only entail the transportation of your possessions from one location to another, but it also represents the start of a new life in a new place. We, at ForMove, have constructed a timetable for you to follow regarding your upcoming relocation. We have not included every specific aspect of your move, but instead we have highlighted items that we believe are important for your upcoming move.

Remember to start the moving process early. Moving is not an overnight occurrence. Relocating takes intricate planning and often is time consuming.

Three Weeks Before Your Move
* Rid yourself of any unwanted items. When you begin preparing to move all your items, you will be surprised by the amount of stuff you actually have packed away. Since more items to transport costs more money, it may be wise to hold a moving sale or donate some items to charity.
* Make a list of everything you are bringing to your new home. Even though many moving companies take an inventory of all your belongings you are transporting, it is a great idea to keep your own list in order to make a smooth transition from your old home to your new home.
* Begin packing! It is never too early to start getting packing materials together and boxing and wrapping items.
* Find out the replacement value of all belongings, for insurance purposes.
* Fill out a change of address form. Notify friends, family and others of your new address.
* Find out where to dispose of household chemicals like old paint.
* Fill out an IRS change of address form.
* Get copies of your medical and dental records, if necessary.
* Get copies of veterinary records, if necessary.
* If you are moving out of state, find out about auto licensing and insurance.
* Notify your kids’ schools and have their records transferred to their new schools.
* Return any cable equipment.
* Make hotel and airline reservations if you need them.
Two Weeks Before Your Move
* Collect all the items you may have loaned out.
* Make arrangements to disconnect gas, electric and other utilities.
* Make arrangements to connect utilities at your new place.
* Arrange to have major appliances prepped for the move.
* Cancel any delivery subscriptions or have deliveries transferred to your new address.
One Week Before Your Move
* Get rid of all flammables.
* Figure out what you’re bringing with you in the car or plane.
* Arrange for removal of “installed items” you’re bringing with you.
* Pack a suitcase with the clothes and toiletries you’ll need the first day in your new home.
* Pack a special box with other essentials you’ll need for the first few days. (Make sure to mark this box “Do Not Move).”
The Day Before You Move
* Take down curtains and curtain rods.
* Empty, defrost and clean your refrigerator. Make sure it has at least 24 hours to air dry.
* Clean and air your stove.
* Make arrangements for somebody to watch your children and/or pets. It will be easy for you and the moving crew to get everything organized in your new home.
